Specialty Coffee Trader

Imperium Commodity Search is exclusively retained by Abana Corporation, the new US entity of an Ethiopian coffee producer and trading house with specialty single origin coffee exports in a number of markets.  For the first time in their 15 year history, the firm is seeking a back to back coffee trader and specialty sales professional to open up and expand their quantities in the North American and European markets.

The incoming coffee trader will have a seat on the managerial team of the business, sitting with the global growth and operations division.  Working closely with the coffee operations and analytics team in the Ethiopian HQ, you will be managing a wide range of sales and trading aspects for the firm from researching and mapping local buyers and building relationships with local coffee market players through seminars and expo’s.

As well as sourcing from their own specialty single origin farm in Ethiopia, our client has agreements with a large number of other coffee producers in and around Ethiopia for the export of their product so is in a position to increase quantities to meet increased demand through the addition of new clients and coffee roasters.

Our client maintains excellent relationships on the green coffee sourcing side of their business and is passionate about the conditions and transparency of the coffee production and trading markets.  Whilst driving PnL remains a key component of this expansion, honestly transparency and integrity are critical to the firm who take a huge amount of pride in what they do.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Managing green coffee bean trading from sourcing origins (Ethiopian farms) into target sales markets (North America, Europe, Middle East etc.)
• Develop a coffee intelligence and analytics network through the collection and analysis of market insight and intelligence around the global commodity and coffee trading markets
• Work closely with sourcing and sales managers in each country to oversee coffee trading activities
• Develop and implement strategic plans for coffee trading operations in selected markets
• Establish partnerships with local roasters and coffee trading participants to form a robust network for the sale of green coffee (specialty & single origin)
• Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on the progression and growth of the international coffee export and trading business
• Conduct Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) by cupping coffee samples
• Work closely with the regional and international logistics and operations team to ensure timely and accurate logistics across the green coffee trading book

Requirements/Qualifications:

• 5+ years’ experience in a green coffee trading position, selling into roasters in North America and/or European markets
• Excellent understanding of the green coffee bean trading, pricing and supply chain structure (derivatives beneficial too)
• Excellent written and verbal communication ability in English
• Fast-paced and entrepreneurial approach to trading and building a specialty green coffee sales pipeline
• Good analytical skills
• Degree in related field (agri-business, finance, international trade, MBA, etc.)
• Excellent integrity and honesty with a passion to improve the coffee trading landscape for the company and its stakeholders/suppliers
