Asset Management

Asset Management Recruitment & Executive Search

Specialist search across institutional investment, portfolio management and global asset management markets.

Asset management brings together investment businesses responsible for deploying capital across public and private markets on behalf of institutions, individuals and other long-term investors.

Imperium supports asset managers, investment boutiques, pension investment teams, sovereign wealth funds, insurance investors and other institutional investment businesses hiring across portfolio management, research, trading, risk and senior leadership.

The market spans a wide range of investment approaches. Traditional long-only equity and fixed-income strategies sit alongside multi-asset portfolios, specialist sector funds, index and passive investment, ETFs and increasingly sophisticated quantitative and rules-based products.

That makes the detail behind an investment professional’s experience important. Two Portfolio Managers may carry the same title while working with completely different asset classes, benchmarks, investment processes, portfolio construction methods and client mandates.

Our searches therefore look beyond job title to understand what somebody invests in, how decisions are made, the capital they have managed, the risks they have owned and the investment environment in which they have performed.

We search the market behind the mandate, from specialist investment professionals through to senior portfolio and business leadership.

Understanding the Global Asset Management Market

Investment mandates shape how capital is managed and talent is built.

Asset management covers a wide range of investment approaches, from benchmark-aware long-only portfolios through to multi-asset solutions, passive products and highly specialised institutional strategies.

The investment process, client base and portfolio structure can vary considerably between them.

Active Equities

Fundamental investment across global, regional and sector-focused equity portfolios, with strategies ranging from concentrated high-conviction funds to larger benchmark-aware mandates.

Fixed Income & Credit

Government bonds, investment-grade and high-yield credit, emerging-market debt and other fixed-income strategies across institutional and retail portfolios.

Multi-Asset & Allocation

Portfolios combining equities, fixed income, commodities, currencies and other exposures through strategic and tactical asset allocation.

ETFs, Index & Passive

Index funds, ETFs and rules-based investment products spanning portfolio management, index implementation, trading, product and capital-markets functions.

Institutional Investment

Pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, insurers, endowments and other long-term investors managing capital against specific return, risk and liability objectives.

Specialist & Thematic Strategies

Focused portfolios built around sectors, regions, investment themes or specialist areas where deeper market knowledge can form a significant part of the investment edge.

The Investment Mandate Defines the Talent Market

An equity manager benchmarked against the MSCI World, an insurance portfolio investing against long-term liabilities and an ETF provider tracking an index may all employ Portfolio Managers, but the underlying experience required is very different.

Our searches are therefore built around the investment mandate, asset class, benchmark, portfolio structure and decision-making responsibility behind the title.

Global Asset Management at Scale

Trillions of dollars are managed across increasingly diverse investment structures.

Asset management is one of the largest pools of professional capital in global financial markets. Traditional active funds now sit alongside passive, ETF and systematic investment products, while institutional portfolios continue to expand across asset classes and geographies.

Scale Is Only the Starting Point

Equity funds remain the largest component of the regulated global fund market, accounting for approximately half of assets. Fixed income, mixed portfolios and money-market strategies create further substantial pools of specialised investment talent. ici.org

The structure of the industry is also changing. ETF assets have continued to grow rapidly, while active managers increasingly compete alongside passive, systematic and rules-based investment products for both capital and investment talent.

That creates very different hiring requirements. A fundamental equity Portfolio Manager, fixed-income investor, ETF specialist and multi-asset allocator may all work within asset management, but their benchmarks, investment processes, products, risk frameworks and client mandates can be entirely different.

For recruitment, the headline scale matters less than understanding where somebody has actually managed capital and how that experience fits the mandate.

Major Asset Managers & Investment Platforms

Scale is concentrated, but the investment models behind it vary considerably.

The largest asset managers oversee trillions of dollars, but their businesses are not interchangeable.

Some have grown around index and passive investment, others remain strongly associated with active portfolio management, while banks, insurers and diversified financial groups operate substantial investment-management businesses alongside their wider activities.

The Investment Model Changes the Experience

Two businesses can each manage trillions of dollars without building remotely identical investment teams.

A fundamental equity manager, an ETF provider and an institutional index platform may all employ Portfolio Managers, traders, analysts and investment specialists, but the investment process, benchmarks, clients, products and decision-making responsibility behind those roles can be very different.

Understanding that distinction is what allows the search to move beyond the company name and identify the experience that actually fits the mandate.

Capital Has No Borders. Conviction Gives It Direction.

Asset Management Talent Across Global Markets

Investment careers develop around established financial centres, institutional capital and specialist investment communities.

Asset management is international, but specialist talent is concentrated around a relatively small number of financial centres.

Some markets have particularly deep pools of Portfolio Managers, analysts and investment leadership. Others have developed around pension capital, sovereign wealth, insurance investment or rapidly growing regional asset-management industries.

For a retained search, the relevant geography therefore depends on the asset class, investment strategy, client base and type of institution behind the mandate.

North American Investment Centres

New York · Boston · Chicago · Toronto · Montreal

North America contains one of the deepest asset-management talent pools in the world.

New York and Boston support major communities across active equities, fixed income, ETFs, institutional investment and investment research. Chicago adds significant trading, derivatives and quantitative expertise, while Toronto and Montreal sit within a substantial Canadian pension and investment-management market.

Talent can move between traditional asset managers, pension investors, banks, insurers and other institutional investment businesses, depending on the strategy and mandate.

UK & European Asset Management Hubs

London · Edinburgh · Paris · Frankfurt · Zurich · Geneva · Luxembourg

London is one of the world’s major centres for portfolio management, investment research, fixed income, multi-asset strategies, ETFs and institutional investment.

Edinburgh retains a longstanding asset-management community, while Paris and Frankfurt support major European investment businesses. Switzerland adds specialist investment and private-capital expertise, and Luxembourg remains important to the international funds industry.

The depth of the European market allows searches to extend across both large diversified managers and more focused investment boutiques.

Asia-Pacific & Middle Eastern Capital Centres

Singapore · Hong Kong · Tokyo · Sydney · Abu Dhabi · Dubai

Asia-Pacific combines established domestic asset-management markets with major regional investment centres.

Singapore and Hong Kong host international and regional investment teams, while Tokyo and Sydney support substantial domestic institutional and asset-management communities. In the Middle East, Abu Dhabi and Dubai are becoming increasingly important as sovereign capital and international investment firms expand their regional capabilities.

These markets can be particularly relevant where a mandate requires Asian investment experience.

Search Follows the Investment Market, Not the Postcode

A Portfolio Manager may be based in London while investing globally. An ETF specialist in New York may be relevant to a European platform, while an institutional investor in Singapore may have spent much of their career allocating capital across North America and Europe.

Location helps define where relevant talent pools are likely to sit, but it does not define the search on its own.

We map strategy, asset class, benchmark, investment process and responsibility for capital first, then search the international markets where that experience is most likely to be found.

Who We Search for Across Asset Management

Portfolio management, research, trading, product, distribution and leadership.

Asset-management titles can look remarkably consistent between businesses.

The experience behind them often is not.

A Portfolio Manager running concentrated global equities has developed a different investment process from somebody implementing an index portfolio. A fixed-income investor managing insurance assets operates against different constraints again, while an institutional investment specialist may be responsible for asset allocation rather than individual security selection.

Our searches therefore start with what somebody has actually managed, researched, traded, built or been commercially responsible for.

Portfolio Management & Investment

Portfolio-management searches can range from specialist asset-class appointments through to broader multi-asset and investment-leadership mandates.

Relevant experience may be defined by strategy, benchmark, portfolio size, investment process, client type and the level of discretion somebody has held over capital.

Portfolio management searches include:

Portfolio Manager · Senior Portfolio Manager · Fund Manager · Investment Director · Equity Portfolio Manager · Fixed Income Portfolio Manager · Multi-Asset Portfolio Manager · Head PM

Research & Investment Strategy

Research teams provide the fundamental, quantitative and macro work behind investment decisions.

Some analysts build deep expertise in sectors, companies or issuers. Others work across economics, asset allocation, portfolio strategy or broader thematic investment questions.

Investment research roles include:

Investment Analyst · Senior Investment Analyst · Equity Analyst · Credit Analyst · Macro Strategist · Investment Strategist · Research Director · Head of Research

Trading & Portfolio Implementation

Buy-side trading sits between investment decisions and the market through which those decisions are executed.

The role can involve execution quality, liquidity, market structure, portfolio implementation, broker relationships and increasingly sophisticated use of electronic and algorithmic trading.

Buy-side trading mandates can include:

Buy-Side Trader · Portfolio Trader · Execution Trader · Equity Trader · Fixed Income Trader · Derivatives Trader · Head of Trading · Head of Execution

ETFs, Index & Passive

Passive investment creates a specialist talent market of its own.

Portfolio implementation, benchmark tracking, creation and redemption activity, liquidity, index changes and ETF capital markets all require experience that differs considerably from conventional discretionary portfolio management.

ETF and index recruitment covers:

ETF Portfolio Manager · Index Portfolio Manager · Passive Fund Manager · ETF Trader · ETF Capital Markets · Index Specialist · Head of ETFs · Head of Index Investment

Institutional Solutions, Product & Distribution

Investment capability still needs to be translated into products and solutions that institutional clients can understand and allocate to.

These roles can sit close to investment teams while also requiring strong knowledge of consultants, pension funds, insurers, sovereign investors and other sophisticated asset owners.

Institutional and product appointments include:

Client Portfolio Manager · Investment Specialist · Product Director · Institutional Sales · Consultant Relations · Investment Solutions Director · Head of Product · Head of Institutional Distribution

Investment Risk & Leadership

Senior mandates can extend beyond an individual portfolio into the investment framework and leadership of the wider business.

That can mean responsibility for capital allocation, portfolio oversight, investment risk, governance, strategy or an entire investment platform.

Senior asset-management searches include:

Chief Investment Officer · Deputy CIO · Head of Investments · Head of Investment Risk · Chief Risk Officer · Investment Director · Managing Director · C-Suite

The Title Travels More Easily Than the Experience

Two Portfolio Managers can have the same seniority and very little else in common.

One may have spent a career selecting individual equities against a benchmark. Another may manage a systematic index portfolio across billions of dollars. A third may allocate between asset classes for a pension or insurance investor.

Those distinctions shape the search.

We spend more time understanding investment process, assets managed, benchmark exposure, decision-making authority and client mandate than comparing titles in isolation.

A Selective Approach to Asset Management Search

Broad investment markets still produce highly specific searches.

Asset management covers an enormous range of investment businesses, but individual mandates usually become much narrower once the requirement is understood properly.

A search may need a proven global equity investor, a fixed-income specialist with institutional experience, an ETF Portfolio Manager, somebody who understands liability-aware portfolios or a senior investment leader capable of overseeing several strategies at once.

Imperium works on a retained basis and deliberately limits the number of clients we represent within any specialist market at one time.

That gives us the space to define the mandate properly, map the relevant asset managers and institutional investors, and approach people confidentially rather than relying on whoever happens to be actively considering a move.

The objective is not to produce the largest list of people working in asset management.

It is to identify the people whose investment experience genuinely fits the mandate.

For Clients
Looking for a senior, specialist or difficult-to-reach hire across portfolio management, investment research, trading, ETFs and index investment, institutional solutions, risk or leadership?

We build the search around the investment strategy, asset class, benchmark, client base, geography and decision-making responsibility that genuinely matter.

For Professionals
We do not operate as a high-volume vacancy business.

If your background sits within portfolio management, investment research, buy-side trading, ETFs, index investment, institutional solutions, product, distribution, investment risk or senior asset-management leadership, we are happy to have a confidential conversation where your experience may be relevant to current or future retained work.
